SECTION 001

Spring 2018

The "Section 001" studio taught by John Dixon was my favorite studio from my time at DAAP. I have a passion for making, and my role in this collaborative studio project allowed me to indulge in my favorite hobby. The simple task stool I developed plays on the joinery and intersections commonly found in furniture.

Our line of furniture that we developed for the studio was entered in ICFF 2018 in NYC.

THE PROJECT

Section 001 is collaborative studio made up of Industrial Design and Architecture students at the University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning. Headed by professors John Dixon and Stephen Slaughter, and UC DAAP’s Director of Design, Gjoko Muratovski, this studio has been tasked with designing the creative studio spaces of the near future.

The studio is focusing on the Communication Design studios in DAAP, as part of a grant to transform the current studios into an inspiring and productive destination. Based on Section 001’s own research, case studies, and industry benchmarking, the studio created objectives that furthered the student’s modes of work by defining the most conducive environments and tools. Section 001 then designed and fabricated a collection of furniture, objects, and spatial layouts which will be showcased at ICFF in May 2018.”

STUDENTS' SPACIAL NEEDS

INDIVIDUAL

Students say that in the first two years of school about 80% of their work is individual. After the first year, almost all of that work is done on their laptops, including the work for their print design class. After a lecture or critique given by their professor, students usually have around two hours of class to work individually.

COLLABORATIVE

In the last couple years of their curriculum, students say about 80% of their work is group work. They usually meet at a someone’s house to do group work because the studio is unreliable since they do not know when other classes are happening.

PRESENTATION

Student’s pin-up work or use screens to present. The available pin-up space is inadequate and they have to be cautious when pinning to the divider walls to ensure that the walls do not fall over. There is not always enough space for everyone to crowd around someone’s work because desks get in the way.

LECTURE

Professors have an extremely difficult time giving lectures and critiques in the 6450 room because of the noise level. They often shush loud speakers in other rooms. Students have a really difficult time paying attention because there is so much going on and they can’t always hear their professor.

DESIGN PHASE

After an extensive research phase, we (the students) began to organize ourselves in to design teams based on our findings, then we narrowing down further to specific items.

I was involved in the general seating group. Our team was responsible for maintaining dialogue with the other groups, as our seating was supplementing the larger, more specialized items.

I was responsible for the task stool.

BRAND & SYSTEM

These are some of the things my peers in the studio designed for this project. My stool was designed to match this aesthetic.

The aesthetic was developed by the CMF Team during our research phase, and we used the “Section 001” brand that they had developed to influence our design decisions.
